“Castle Rest” was a white Victorian house with a gingerbread porch and a steepled cuppola. I saw it while at a lake in New England and felt there was something mysterious and magnetic about it. When I returned to New York, I painted it inspired by the Hopperesque feeling that stayed with me. This painting still has the same allure for me. I’m sometimes tempted to take a few days to see if I can find the house again but I’m sure it’s not the same.
